Gates fail at the hinges and they fail because of geometry. A gate is a lever, and every bit of its weight is trying to rotate it out of square around the top hinge. A gate built without accounting for that will drag on the ground within a year no matter how good the welds are.

That is why a fabricated gate is not just a fence panel with hinges. It has a diagonal brace running the right way, hinges sized for the actual weight, and a post that is set deep enough to carry it. Get those three right and the gate still closes in ten years.

What we build

Driveway and yard gates in steel, single or double, with the frame sized for the span rather than a standard section.

Steel frames behind timber cladding, which gives you the look of a wood gate and the life of a steel one.

Pedestrian gates and side access, usually the ones that get slammed the most.

Fence sections and infill panels to match existing runs.

Hinges, latches, drop bolts and the hardware, made or specified to suit the weight rather than picked to suit the price.

Why gates sag and how to stop it

The brace has to run from the bottom of the hinge side to the top of the latch side. Run the other way it is in tension and does nothing useful, which is the single most common mistake on homemade gates.

Hinges get sized for the weight plus the leverage, not just the weight. A gate that weighs eighty pounds puts far more than eighty pounds through the top hinge.

The post matters more than the gate. A perfect gate on an under set post will drag, and repairing that means digging, not welding.

Ohio weather adds a frost heave problem that a lot of gate installs ignore, which is why gates that closed fine in October catch in February.

Hanging a new gate on posts that will not carry it. We will tell you the posts need doing first, because the alternative is you paying us twice.

Custom steel fences and gates questions

Why does my gate drag on the ground?

Almost always the brace or the post. If the diagonal runs the wrong way it is doing nothing, and if the post has moved the gate follows it. Both are fixable, but they are different fixes.

Can you build a steel frame for a wood gate?

Yes, and it is a good combination. You get the appearance of timber and a frame that stays square, which is the part that fails on an all wood gate.

Do you set the posts too?

We can, or work with posts you have set. Either way the posts get assessed before the gate is hung, because hanging a good gate on a bad post wastes the gate.

How long does a custom gate take?

From measuring to hanging is usually a couple of weeks depending on the queue and on whether posts need setting and curing. You get a date rather than a guess.
