Window guards are one of the few things where the fit is the security. A guard that is close enough leaves a gap at one edge, and a gap at one edge is a place to get a bar in. Openings on older Cleveland houses and storefronts are rarely square and rarely the same as each other, which is exactly why stock guards do not work well on them.

The other half of it is the fixing. A heavy guard bolted into soft mortar or rotted timber comes off with a crowbar, and the guard was never the weak point.

What gets made

Window guards for basement, ground floor and storefront windows, made to each opening rather than to the nearest stock size.

Door bars and gate inserts for rear and side access doors.

Removable and hinged guards where egress matters, because a guard on a bedroom window that cannot be opened from inside is a fire risk rather than a security measure.

Guards for commercial units, where the requirement is usually deterrence and speed of entry rather than absolute strength.

Repairs and refitting of existing guards that have corroded or worked loose.

Fixings, egress and honesty about what a guard does

A guard is a delay, not a wall. The point is to make an opening slow, awkward and loud, so somebody moves to an easier target. Anyone selling you impenetrable is selling something.

The fixings do most of the work. Bolts get sized and placed into sound material, and where the substrate is soft the fixing plan changes rather than the bolts getting longer.

Egress is not optional. Any guard on a required escape window has to be openable from the inside without a key, and we will build it that way or decline the job. This is one where doing what a customer asks can get somebody killed.

When bars are the wrong answer

Fixed guards on required escape windows. Those get built to open from the inside without a key or they do not get built, and that is not negotiable regardless of what a customer wants.

Security bars and window guards questions

Do window guards have to open from the inside?

On any window that is a required escape route, yes, and it has to open without a key. We build them that way or we decline the job, because the alternative is a fire risk dressed up as security.

Are custom guards better than stock ones?

On old buildings, considerably. Openings are rarely square and rarely identical, so a stock guard leaves a gap at one edge, and a gap is where someone gets a bar in.

How secure are they really?

A guard is a delay, not a barrier. It makes an opening slow, awkward and noisy so somebody picks an easier target. Anyone promising more than that is overselling.

Can you repair or refit existing guards?

Yes. Corroded fixings and loose guards are common and usually a cheap fix compared to replacing the guard itself.
